Novel Studies

Both 7th and 8th graders are analyzing how elements we've studied apply to novels they are currently reading.

7th graders have begun Lois Lowry's classic utopian/dystopia novel, The Giver.

8th graders have been learning about the 12 stages of the Hero's Journey, and chose novels they will use to identify and track how it winds it's way through a narrative.

We've spent the past weeks looking at Narrative Elements in short stories, and students have practiced by applying their knowledge to their independent reading books.

We looked at how readers infer Character Traits, and dissected the Setting, Plot, and Character elements in stories to see how they influence each other.

We are ready to look at Themes.

Visit the grade level pages to see the texts and materials students are using to do this...

It's On!

Our second normal day of Reading class had students setting up Reading notebooks, reviewing Narrative Elements, and seeing how to use them to create clear, concise summaries.

Later this week, we will ninja down to the library to secure an Independent Reading book.
